TLDSB students participate in the Georgian College High School Hospitality Competition

On October 22, hospitality and tourism students from Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School (BMLSS), Gravenhurst High School (GHS), and Huntsville High School competed at the Georgian College High School Hospitality Competition.

This year’s event was the first competition since the COVID-19 pandemic, and hosted Grade 9 to 12 students from schools within the District of Muskoka, Regional Municipality of Durham, and Simcoe County. Students competed in teams of two in the cooking category, or individually in the baking category, using tools and ingredients provided to create specific dishes within a set time frame being judged on overall professionalism/sanitation, technique/skills, presentation, and taste/flavour.

A team of two students, Liam Cooper and Aydan Black from BMLSS competed in the cooking category and placed third!

GHS Grade 12 student, Mia Garcia, competed in the baking category and placed third as well!

Each student who placed received a $500 scholarship to go towards hospitality related programs at the college.

“We are really proud of the work Mia put into the day,” said GHS hospitality and tourism teacher, Sara Underwood. “This initiative is a great way for students to participate in a fun competition while seeing and working in the kitchens at the college.”

Congratulations, students!
