Mariposa Elementary School celebrates 50 years

On May 6, Mariposa Elementary School (MES) celebrated an exciting milestone – its 50th anniversary!

The open house style celebration welcomed alumni, current and past staff, students, and their families, as well as community members. Attendees spent the afternoon touring classrooms, walking down “year-themed” hallways, listening to a special performance from the school choir, and hearing from guest speakers, including Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) Chair of the Board, Bruce Reain, Mayor of City of Kawartha Lakes, Doug Elmslie, City of Kawartha Lakes Ward 4 Councillor, Dan Joyce, current MES teacher, Amy Kennedy, retired MES teacher, Vicki Pereira, and retired MES teacher, Heather Hodgson. MES merchandise in both modern and vintage styles were also available to purchase while enjoying light refreshments.

MES was built in 1972. At the time of its construction, there were numerous one-room schoolhouses in the area, along with the larger Little Britain and Oakwood schools. These buildings closed to form the consolidated MES we know today, appropriately named for the former Mariposa Township whose community it served.
