TLDSB students compete at the Skills Ontario provincial competition

From May 1 to 3, over 250 Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) Grade 7 to 12 students and staff travelled to Toronto to compete in the Skills Ontario provincial competitions, conferences, or participate in the trade show.

Students competed individually and in groups against students from schools across the province.
At the elementary level, 12 students and three educators represented TLDSB in the television and video, construction, and robotics competitions. At the secondary level, 43 students and 15 educators represented TLDSB in 25 competitions, including carpentry, electrical, masonry, baking, photography, web design, automotive, and much more!

Below are the results from the competitions:

Elementary:

  • Huntsville Public School students Cali Turnbull and Livany Tate received a bronze medal in the Grade 7/8 television and video competition
  • Fenelon Township Public School students, Payton Moody, Ethan Gibson, Liam Doidge, and Carson Bradley received a gold medal in the constructions competition

Secondary:

  • Huntsville High School student Oliver Walsh received a silver medal in the individual carpentry competition
  • I.E. Weldon Secondary School students Ben Deschamps, Jaidon Mitchell, Caleb Dyck, and Cooper Falls won a gold medal in the home and team building competition
  • Gravenhurst High School student Jocelyn Aldom received a gold medal in the job interview competition
  • Huntsville High School student Wil Sinclair received a gold medal in the electrical competition

Both Aldom and Sinclair will advance to the national competition held in Winnipeg at the end of May as members of Team Ontario.

On day two of the event, students and educators also participated in conferences offered at the event. The first group of 20 TLDSB students who self-identify with status and non-status Indigenous ancestry, and six educators participated in a First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Student Conference. The second group, included guidance educators from around the Board who participated in a Skilled Trades Conference. And lastly, the third group, composed of 140 Grade 9 to 12 students participated in the Skills Ontario Young Women’s Conference.

The year’s Skills Ontario journey saw staff and students come together to apply curriculum content in a meaningful way. Through school competitions, board-level qualifying rounds, and at the Toronto Congress Centre provincial competitions, TLDSB students showcased their skills and talents.
